Late Night Talk: Born in Flames: LGBTQ Art in America
Size
Text

How have artists used their work to express, explore, and represent sexual identity? In this talk, art historian Tara Burk will provide a chronological overview of LGBTQ art history in America that will enrich conventional understandings of modern and contemporary art. Burk will discuss major (and minor) artists and artworks as well as key themes and strategies of LGBTQ art. Since the history of LGBTQ art is inextricably connected to the history of LGBTQ social justice, this presentation will focus on the revolutionary potential of LGBTQ art.

Tara Burk is an art historian who specializes in LGBTQ art in US American history. She teaches at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she lives. Her research has been published in Women's Studies Quarterly and Journal of Curatorial Studies. Lately, Burk has been writing an essay about trans-feminist protest art and digitizing her LGBTQ art and film courses so they are available to all.
