What is color vision deficiency?
Color vision deficiency, more commonly known as “color blindness,” affects about 8% of the population. Individuals with color vision deficiency see color differently than most people. A person with color vision deficiency may not see the full spectrum of colors, or they may have difficulty distinguishing between colors. The most common type of color vision deficiency makes it hard to tell the difference between red and green.

Most types of color vision deficiencies are genetic, meaning they are passed down from parents. Color vision deficiencies can also occur from aging or damage to the eye or brain.
Learn more about color vision deficiencies from the National Eye Institute.

Are the glasses for all color vision deficiencies?
EnChroma® glasses work for about 8 out of 10 people with red-green type color vision deficiency. Results and reaction times vary. Some people experience an immediate effect, while for others it can take up to 10 minutes to adjust.

How can I reserve a set of glasses?
Click this link to reserve a date and time.

Are the glasses free to use?
Yes, our glasses are free to check out.

How long do I get to use the glasses?
Each reservation is for up to 1.5 hours. You can reserve two time slots for a longer visit to the Museum.

Where do I check out and return the glasses?
Color correcting glasses can be checked out from and returned to the Guest Services Desk at the Main Entrance.

Can I keep my prescription glasses on while using the color correcting glasses?
Yes, we offer “fit-over”–style frames. Select the “fit-over frame" option when scheduling your reservation.

How do the glasses work?
Red-green type color vision deficiency is caused by difficulty distinguishing between red and green. Color correcting glasses block part of the visible color spectrum, making it easier for individuals with color vision deficiency to see these colors separately.

I liked the glasses; where can I purchase a pair for myself?
