Talk: The Myths of Suicide

Horchow Auditorium, 2:00–3:00 p.m.

It is thought that every 16 minutes someone dies from suicide. Every 17 minutes those close to them are left to manage the loss. Suicide is surrounded by myths—myths that all too often impact how we cope with the suicide of someone close. Dr. Peter Thomas, Foundation 45’s Psychologist will lead a mental health discussion on the myths of suicide in relation to the DMA's exhibition Between Wonder and Seduction and the artist Abraham Ángel’s final work, I Killed Myself for a Traitorous Woman

Dr. Thomas is a licensed psychologist for the State of Texas and has been practicing therapy in the DFW area since 1995. He graduated from the University of North Texas with his doctorate in counselling psychology in 2008, and he completed his post-doctorate training at SMU/UTD and TWU. Since then, he has worked extensively with adolescents and adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Currently, he is in practice with Psychiatric Medical Associates, PA in Plano, Texas, working in conjunction with psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, general medical practitioners, and research professionals. Thomas is known for his work with adolescents addressing issues such as depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and personality issues. He also provides treatment on chronic suicidality and self-injury with teens.
