Force of Evil (1948)

Recognized as one of the great American film noirs, Force of Evil, directed by Abraham Polonsky, reflects the gritty and realistic scenes that influenced Edward Hopper in his works, as it follows lawyer Joe Morse, working for a powerful gangster, Tucker, who wishes to consolidate and control the numbers racket in New York.  It is said that Polonsky, on a break from shooting the film in New York,  took one of Hollywood's great cinematographers, George Barnes, to an exhibition of Hopper paintings and said: "That's what I want this picture to look like" - and it did.
