Lynsey Addario says that, as a photojournalist, you have to “be honest with your representation.” Having traveled to numerous conflict zones and some of the most remote areas of the world, Addario has made a career of documenting the experiences of women in the military, maternal mortality, and the Syrian refugee crisis. She is a MacArthur Genius Grant honoree and a winner of the Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography for her work in Darfur. Her work in 2009 with the New York Times team covering the war in Afghanistan also garnered her a Pulitzer Prize.
In her new book, It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War, Addario chronicles her life’s many intersecting facets: photographer, wife, and new mother. Having successfully worked her way into the male-dominated field of photojournalism, Addario records how she balances her personal life and her often-dangerous career. As one of the four journalists held captive in Libya in 2004, Addario has known extreme danger in her pursuit to expose atrocities and human suffering, along with the fear that she might never see her loved ones again. It is for this reason that this book is more than just a snapshot of life on the front lines; it is witness to the human cost of war.
