This workshop, inspired by the exhibition Edward Steichen: In Exaltation of Flowers, will teach you the basics of watercolor still-life painting. The workshop will begin with a short tour of the exhibition, where you will learn more about the significance of the flowers chosen for the mural and the fascinating backstory of the women depicted. The second portion will be in the Center for Creative Connections Studio, where you will learn painting techniques from artist Carol Ivey. After you choose flowers for your own personal still life, Ivey will show you basic approaches such as composition and point of view, along with techniques of washes and some textural effects. No previous experience in watercolors is necessary, and all materials will be provided.
About the intsructor:
Fort Worth–based artist Carol Ivey received a BA in studio art from the University of Texas at Austin. She has taught numerous workshops and classes and has served as juror on exhibitions across North Texas. In 2009 and 2013, Ivey was a finalist in the Hunting Art Prize in Houston. She is currently represented by Artspace111 in Fort Worth and by The Hunt Gallery in San Antonio. Ivey’s subject matter consists of found objects, including fruit and flowers from the garden, bird's nests, cracked and broken vases, and dried sunflowers. These ordinary objects are elevated beyond their everyday value in her carefully arranged, serene compositions. The artist's studio, located in the Near East Side of Fort Worth, plays a vital role in her paintings and drawings. Take a look at Carol Ivey’s work on her website here.
