Dallas, TX—May 25, 2023—The Dallas Museum of Art is pleased to announce its 2023 Awards to Artists recipients. This year, 10 artists, ages 18 to 51, received awards from the Clare Hart DeGolyer Memorial Fund Award, the Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough Fund Award and the Otis and Velma Davis Dozier Travel Grant. All 2023 recipients are from Texas, including seven based in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Through the three funds, over $25,000 was awarded to these up-and-coming artists. Krista Chalkley, multidisciplinary artist, curator and arts administrator, and 2022 Kimbrough Fund awardee, served as this year’s guest juror.
“It is such a privilege to facilitate the career development of emerging and established artists with roots here in Texas through our Awards to Artists grants,” says Dr. Anna Katherine Brodbeck, Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. “The 2023 award recipients show great promise responding to pressing issues through their multivalent practices, and I look forward to seeing how they progress in their practices in the years ahead.”
The DeGolyer and Kimbrough funds will primarily support research and materials for the development of new, ambitious bodies of work. Projects and activities include the creation of 3D-modeled architectural spaces to be used in a video series; the development of a ceramic glaze mimicking the chemical composition of the lunar surface; the exploration of new techniques including lacemaking, 3D wall tapestry and woodworking for a forthcoming exhibition; studio space; and supplies to support portfolio development in pursuit of higher education. The Otis and Velma Davis Dozier Travel Grant will support travel across Texas; Kōyasan, Japan; and Tokyo, Japan, to observe rituals of instrumental performance and sonic therapy in preparation for a performance-based exhibition considering healing, injury, labor and sonic meditations; and research trips to Egypt, Sudan and Europe to investigate architecture and writing as tools of place making and belonging.

“I am thrilled to serve as the guest juror for this year’s Awards to Artists grant. I know firsthand the veritable impact these grants have on an artist’s career, stemming from both the financial and moral support they provide,” says guest juror Krista Chalkley. “It is an incredible privilege to pass on that same honor and opportunity to my fellow artists, and I look forward to seeing how that manifests in each of the varying practices of this cohort.”
About the DMA’s Annual Awards
The Museum’s annual awards were established in 1980 by the Clare Hart DeGolyer Memorial Fund and the Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough Fund to recognize exceptional talent and potential in young visual artists who show a commitment to continuing their artistic endeavors. The two funds have awarded nearly $710,000 to artists since their founding, supporting almost 350 recipients. The Otis and Velma Davis Dozier Travel Grant was created in 1990 and honors the memory of Dallas artists Otis and Velma Dozier, who strongly believed in the enriching influence of travel on an artist’s work. The grant seeks to recognize exceptional talent in professional artists who wish to expand their artistic horizons through domestic or foreign travel. It is awarded to professional artists at least 30 years of age who reside in Texas. Since the fund’s development, the Otis and Velma Davis Dozier Travel Grant has given over $240,000. Many award recipients have gone on to successful careers within North Texas and across the country, including Misty Keasler, David Bates, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Lawrence Lee, Melissa Miller, Helen Altman, Annette Lawrence, Katrina Moorhead, Ludwig Schwarz and John Pomara, among many others.
