Vigil, a wise and electric novel by George Saunders, takes place at the bedside of an oil company CEO in the twilight hours of his life as he is ferried from this world into the next. Jill “Doll” Blaine finds herself hurtling toward earth to shepherd him into the afterlife, having done this hundreds of times since her own death. The powerful K. J. Boone will not be consoled as her previous charges were. He lived a big, bold life, and the world is better for it, right?

Vigil transports us through the final evening of an epic, complicated life. Saunders wields his wild imagination to take on the gravest issues of our time, spinning a tale that encompasses the dichotomies of life and the thorny question of absolution.

George Saunders’s books include Lincoln in the Bardo, which won the Man Booker Prize, and the story collection Tenth of December, a finalist for the National Book Award; both were chosen for The New York Times list of the 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. In 2013, he was named by Time magazine as one of the world’s 100 Most Influential People.
