Sensory Days

Sensory Days are a collaboration between local arts and culture organizations to provide sensory-friendly programming. Participating organizations provide activities at each event and take turns hosting Sensory Days.

On selected days, the DMA will be open early for children with autism and their families to enjoy art together in a fun environment. Families have the opportunity to participate in staff-led gallery experiences and activities provided by our Sensory Days partners. Participants can enjoy an interactive performance with a music therapist, and relax in our sensory room facilitated by occupational therapy students from Texas Woman’s University—all before public hours.

To receive updates on upcoming Sensory Days, sign up for our Sensory Day Newsletter.

Sensory Days at the DMA are made possible through a partnership with Texas Woman's University, the Nasher Sculpture Center, Frontiers of Flight Museum, the Dallas Public Library, the Dallas Zoo, and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

Email us if you have questions about events or would like more information about what to expect.

Summer Art Camps

At the DMA's Summer Art Camps, we believe that everyone should have access to arts education, regardless of age, learning style, or disability. That's why we've designed our camps to be a sensory-friendly experience for all. Our commitment to accessibility means that we strive to accommodate your child's needs, no matter what their interests may be.

We have implemented a variety of strategies to make our camps inclusive and welcoming for students with disabilities. This includes providing de-escalation resources, training our teachers and interns to support students with different needs, and having on-site specialists available to assist students on the spectrum.

Visit the Summer Art Camps page to view the full listing of camps.

We understand that every child is unique, and we want to ensure that each camper feels comfortable and supported at our Summer Art Camps. If you have any questions or concerns about how we can accommodate your child's needs, please don't hesitate to reach out to us via email at familyprograms@dma.org.

Sensory-Friendly Hours

We offer several opportunities to explore the DMA and enjoy art activities in an optimal sensory-friendly environment. Below are some offerings that take place during typical low-traffic hours at the Museum.

Visit the DMA Barefoot

Embark on a barefoot exploration of the Museum! Inspired by the Barefoot Autism Challenge, this accommodation allows visitors to experience the Museum without shoes. The challenge aligns with Autism Acceptance Month, held in April each year. Tyler Leech, the creator of the challenge, highlights that many autistic individuals find comfort in going barefoot as it offers natural stimulation, aiding in processing environmental information and fostering a sense of grounding. You don't have to wait for our annual Barefoot Day to enjoy this unique experience; enjoy it during regular Museum hours.

Lighten your load by leaving your shoes and backpacks at the Visitor Services Coat Check. This convenient service is provided free of charge.

We recommend visiting on Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Sundays around 11:00 a.m. for families seeking a quieter Museum experience.

Open Studio Sensory Hour

Whether you love to draw, paint, sculpt, or glue, we've got a project for you! Stop by on the first and third Saturday and Sunday, September–May. Art projects change each month, offering new inspiration for playing and creating. All materials are provided.

The first hour of Open Studio will be dedicated to providing a sensory-friendly environment for art making, with a focus on creating a quiet and calming atmosphere.

Open Studio Sensory Hour is offered from September to May. During the summer months, we provide Art Kits for a take-home activity. Please refer to the events calendar for detailed information on dates and times.
