The metal used for weapons, the weaving techniques used for tunics, and the visual imagery all provide important information about the cultural context of an Andean artwork. The Inca and pre-Inca cultures of the Andes flourished for over three thousand years. While they fashioned detailed recording devices from knotted cords, ancient Andean populations did not utilize a recognizable writing system. Scholars of Andean cultures, therefore, focus their investigations on the material remains of these impressive world cultures. During this talk, Dr. Kimberly L. Jones, curator of the current exhibition Inca: Conquests of the Andes/Los Incas y las conquistas de los Andes, will highlight metal weapons, weaving techniques and visual imagery of particular objects to demonstrate how joint archaeological research and material studies serve to enrich understanding of ancient Andean cultures.
