DMA Partners in Book Talk are invited to a special book-club-style discussion of Charles C. Mann's 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus and a related tour.

1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus is a fast-paced interdisciplinary historical account that debunks the Eurocentric paradigm of the Americas prior to the arrival of Columbus. Instead of the “primitive” viewing of the Americas, Mann works to cultivate a more accurate understanding of the highly developed and technologically advanced indigenous cultures that Columbus discovered.

The book is 541 pages and covers the histories of the Americas in depth. Please feel free to read as much as you want, but during Book Talk we will focus on the theories of turmoil Mann presents, specifically war and disease, and how these affected the Inca on the eve of Columbus's arrival. Following the event, we will tour selected works in the DMA’s collection and in Inca: Conquests of the Andes.

Space is limited and a reservation is required.
Please reply to Maegan Hoffmann by Monday, May 25, via e-mail at mhoffmann@DMA.org or by calling 214-922-1208.
