Juan Miró, FAIA LEED AP, was born in Barcelona and obtained his professional degree in Madrid. He received a master’s degree at Yale University. Prior to forming Miró Rivera Architects, Miró worked at Gwathmey Siegel & Associates and in Spain with his father, Antonio Miró; Fernando Higueras; Felix Candela; and Santiago Calatrava on a wide range of projects.
Miguel Rivera, FAIA LEEP AP, was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and obtained his bachelor’s degree there. He earned his master’s from Columbia University in New York. Before forming Miró Rivera Architects, Rivera was an associate at Mitchell/Giurgola Architects in New York, where he worked on several award-winning institutional projects.
Both men have been active in the AIA, acting as jurors for design awards across the country. Both lecture at architecture schools in universities in the U.S. and abroad. Miró has taught at UT-Austin for 20 years. Their work has been published in several books and publications, including Architectural Record and the New York Times, and has been exhibited in Berlin and the Venice Architectural Biennale. Their firm’s design approach is built on the belief that architecture should engage in a positive dialog with the community, both responding to and reimagining its context. Their philosophy is rooted in what they call “responsible architecture.” It is an approach that responds to the three basic areas of responsibility that they believe architects must address in every project: the architect as a thinker, as a builder, as an artist. The studio has received over 100 design awards, including 40 AIA awards. They have been listed as one of ArchDaily’s World’s Best Architects and have been named the 2023 Texas Medal of Arts in Architecture honoree.
