In conversation with KERA's Krys Boyd
In What Unites Us, a collection of wholly original essays, venerated television journalist Dan Rather celebrates our shared values and what matters most in our great country, and shows us what patriotism looks like. Krys Boyd, host and managing editor of Think on KERA, will moderate a conversation with Rather.
Writing about the institutions that sustain us such as public libraries, public schools, and national parks; the values that have transformed us such as the struggle for civil rights; and the drive toward science and innovation that has made America great, Rather brings to bear his decades of experience on the frontlines of the world’s biggest stories, and offers readers a way forward.
Dan Rather is one of the world’s best-known journalists and the recipient of virtually every honor in broadcast journalism, including numerous Emmy Awards, several Peabody Awards, and the 2012 Edward R. Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Dan Rather is not just a national treasure. He has become a courageous voice of reason with both a sense of history and a true moral compass.”—Elisabeth Scharlatt, Algonquin Books
Please note that Dan Rather will not do a book signing following the event.
Before the event: Spend time in the DMA’s exhibitionTruth: 24 frames per second, and view Dara Birnbaum’s multi-screen response to the 1989 student uprising in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. The installation examines the moment when multiple American television journalists, including Dan Rather, were cut off from broadcasting the day’s violent events. This exhibition brings together 24 pioneers of film and video and over six decades of work, focusing on themes of truth and reality in contemporary life.
