Over the past 70 years, Dior's creative directors have drawn inspiration from such disparate sources as botany, Rococo art, military dress, and the Dior archives in the creation of one-of-a-kind couture designs. Join fashion historian Amber Butchart for a talk exploring the creative ways in which fashion designers past and present have interpreted the world around them. From the early 20th century to 2019 New York Fashion week, Butchart will discuss the nature of inspiration and innovation in the world of fashion and the styles that designers keep coming back to.
Amber Butchart is a fashion historian, author, and broadcaster specializing in the historical intersections of dress, politics, and culture. She is currently an Associate Lecturer in Cultural and Historical Studies at London College of Fashion, and formerly a Research Fellow at the University of the Arts London. Butchart has written books on the perennial influence of nautical dress and the impact of film on fashion, in addition to articles for The Guardian, Times Literary Supplement, Financial Times, Icon, The Pool, and Frieze. She is regularly asked to speak about her work on-air and on-site for BBC, the Tate, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
