When Gauguin came to Arles to join van Gogh as the second painter in "The Studio of the South" in 1888, he was shown to his bedroom decorated by two recently painted floral still-lifes of sunflowers. Gauguin also painted a portrait of van Gogh painting the sunflowers and, many years later, Gauguin planted a flower garden in Tahiti and painted four major floral still-life paintings that recall his time with van Gogh.
