In September, Late Nights is going retro with a double-feature of Hairspray and Cry-Baby. Enjoy two films that take an offbeat look at mid-century pop culture.
8:30 p.m. First, sing along with Tracy Turnblad and friends in the 2007 musical revamp of John Waters' 1988 film. In 1960s Baltimore, dance-loving teen Tracy Turnblad auditions for a spot on the Corny Collins Show and wins. With mile-high hair and trendsetting dance moves, she becomes an overnight celebrity, but is it enough to overthrow the current dance queen and bring racial integration to the show? This film is rated PG (2007, 120 min).
10:30 p.m. End your night with the campy cult film Cry-Baby, starring a young Johnny Depp in the brooding, motorcycle-riding title role. Allison, a squeaky-clean "square," falls for Cry-Baby and joins his gang of greasers, rockabillies, and juvenile delinquents. Can the two be together despite the thwarting efforts of Allison's family and friends? This film is rated PG-13 (1990, 92 min).
This film is part of Late Nights at the Dallas Museum of Art.
