Flowers have always been a beautiful accessory, but in his 2016 book The Reason for Flowers, author and ecologist Stephen Buchmann digs into their true impact on human history and the environment. Called “fascinating” (The Wall Street Journal) and “captivating” (Publishers Weekly), the book breaks down the science of flowers alongside accounts of how flowers have influenced everything from haute couture fashion and medicine to literature, food, and art. In this talk, Buchmann will share insights and readings from The Reason for Flowers accompanied by stunning original photographs. Join the author for a book signing after the talk. Copies of The Reason for Flowers will be available for purchase in the DMA Store.

Stephen Buchmann is a pollination ecologist specializing in bees, and an adjunct professor with the departments of Entomology and of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona. He is a frequent guest on many public media venues including NPR’s All Things Considered and Science Friday. Reviews of his books have appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Time and Discover magazines, and other national publications.

This talk is part of Late Nights at the Dallas Museum of Art.
