Film Screening: The Mourning Of, a film by Merced Elizondo
Level 1, Horchow Auditorium
Join Dallas-based filmmaker Merced Elizondo to view a screening of his latest short film, followed by a Q & A session with the actors.

Maribel has been mourning the tragic loss of her mother in the most peculiar way imaginable— by secretly attending the funerals of strangers. After weeks of lying and searching for solace through the grief of others, her inability to move on finally catches up with her.

Merced Elizondo is a Mexican American filmmaker from Texas who launched his career in 2017 after working on multiple television and film productions across his home state. Since then, he has been nominated for an Imagen Award, selected as a directing fellow for Ryan Murphy's Half Initiative in 2022, and shortlisted for a Young Director Award at Cannes Lions. In 2021 he was selected as a fellow for HBO's Tomorrows Filmmakers Today program and honored as “Person of the Year” by the National Hispanic Institute.

His latest film, The Mourning Of, is a proof-of-concept short that was awarded a NewNarratives Filmmaker Grant through NewFilmmakers Los Angeles and Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022. It’s currently on the 2024–2025 festival circuit and won the Best Live Action Short Film award at the 2024 St. Louis International Film Festival, officially making it Oscar® Qualifying. Elizondo is currently writing and developing his debut feature film, The Thing About Elephants.
