Presented in partnership with the Pan-African Connection Bookstore and Resource Center

Rally your allies and head to the DMA! There is a new world order at play. From fighting to fashion to fictitious worlds, fans are invited to rejoice at the return to Wakanda with a talk by DMA curator Dr. Roslyn A. Walker, interactive demonstrations, and the formidable power of community.

I HAVE NO LOVE FOR THE SURFACE WORLD

5:00–8:30 p.m., Pick up an activity sheet in the Concourse
Dip into the depths of our Indigenous American Art galleries to find out how filmmakers turned to Mesoamerican cultures to invent and adapt the fictional ancient civilization of Talokan.
Complete the activity and win a prize.

BROKEN PEOPLE CAN BE GREAT LEADERS

5:30–8:30 p.m., Founders Room
Tap into your inner hero, suit up for battle, and get ready to defend your kingdom as you create a mask that unleashes your unique superpowers.
While supplies last; first come, first served.

GUNS. SO PRIMITIVE.

6:00–6:30 p.m., Hamon Atrium
Marvel at the high kicks and quick flips of the Dallas Malandros as they demonstrate Capoeira, a martial arts technique used by Black Panther combining dance, acrobatics, and spirituality that originated in Africa.

THE WISE BUILD BRIDGES

7:00–8:30 p.m., Hamon Atrium
Get loud and proud while you sway to the rhythm of pulsating African beats in this drum circle led by the Pan-African Connection Bookstore and Resource Center.

THIS CORSET IS REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE

7:30 p.m., Horchow Auditorium
Join Dr. Roslyn A. Walker, DMA Senior Curator of the Arts of Africa, the Americas, and the Pacific, as she puts the extraordinary costumes created for the Marvel Universe into context within the rich and diverse history of African fashion. Drawing from the DMA’s collection, she will trace some of the film's forward-thinking designs to their Indigenous roots in cultures such as the Mangbetu and Bamana peoples.

HAVE I NOT GIVEN EVERYTHING?

8:00 p.m., Level 4 Landing
Learn about traditional African headwraps and their cultural history from Iyabo Spears while watching her demonstrate proper ways to wear and style this expressive form of personal adornment.
