Virtual Studio: Black Love All-Encompassing focuses on the stories of Black people around the world in order to sit with what it means to think about Black love in a variety of ways. What does it mean when love reaches and covers all parts of ourselves—to be “all-encompassing”?

Featured Guest Speakers:

Hakeem Adewumi – Photographer + Creative Artist

Charlesia McKinney – Scholar + Educator

Dr. Omaris Zamora – Scholar + Spoken Word Poet

The purpose of this virtual studio is two-fold: The first is to use art as a way for us to understand multiple experiences of Black love from the perspective of different artists from the African diaspora in a way that expands our traditional understandings of Blackness in the Americas—the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean and its immigrants. The second purpose of this virtual studio is to explore what connections exist when Black love works to show us how it exists across borders—both land and marine. A Black love supreme exists through the work of artists that bridge Black and Latinx communities here in our home in Texas. By placing artistic works that encompass many different kinds of love—romantic love, love for the self, community, and the earth—then together we can build possibilities to build bridges and re-create community.
