McDermott Internships offer full-time, temporary opportunities for recent graduates or emerging professionals to explore museum careers. During their tenure, McDermott Interns work closely with their supervisors as well as staff across the Museum on a variety of projects, exhibitions, and programs, gaining an in-depth perspective on museum work. Interns also explore Dallas’s rich cultural scene through performances, museum visits, and collection tours arranged by the DMA.
International candidates require proof of eligibility to work in the United States before the first day of the program, and the DMA is unable to provide any assistance regarding paperwork or fees associated with obtaining such eligibility. The Dallas Museum of Art offers up to eight summer internship positions in the Education Department, open to college students who are completing their degrees and can receive course credit. Interns work closely with art instructors to facilitate Summer Art Camp programs designed for children ages 4–12. Interns build hands-on teaching skills by helping guide students in art-making projects, games, and sensory explorations.

When programming needs are in alignment, the Dallas Museum of Art has hosted one paid internship for a current student or recent graduate of an early learning education program. The Early Learning Intern gains hands-on experience using a variety of teaching skills through facilitating art experiences for early learners ages 3–6 in the galleries.

Salary: $18/hour, 14 hours per week
The Mildred R. and Frederick M. Mayer Library offers internship and practicum opportunities to students enrolled in library and information science programs. The Shirley Phillipson Pollock Internship in Art Librarianship offers a paid opportunity for current students or recent graduates of graduate library or information science programs to gain experience working in an art museum library setting. The internship can be configured as a practicum to fulfill the requirements of the MLIS degree where applicable.
Interns collaborate with professional staff and participate in the Mayer Library's daily activities while also contributing to special projects. Interns will have the opportunity to develop skills in public services, collection management, technical services, and special projects through collaboration with library staff.

Due to the ongoing closure of the Center for Creative Connections, internships for summer 2024 will not be available. When possible, the Dallas Museum of Art offers one paid summer internship in the Center for Creative Connections (C3) to a college student. Interns work closely with C3 staff to learn about the management of an interactive educational space, including strategies for visitor engagement and methods for evaluation.
