Specially designed for K–12 classroom, homeschool, and community groups of 10 or more children, school visits at the DMA facilitate wonder, joy, and creativity in students who participate. Our goal is to help every student make meaningful connections with art. School visits are always free for Dallas ISD schools. Bus scholarships are available for all Dallas Title I schools from any district. Apply for a bus scholarship here.

Starting in September, these per-student fees will help the DMA support its educational programs and ensure equitable learning experiences for all students who visit the Museum. To learn more about our guided options, click here. To learn more about self-guided visits, click here.

How do I schedule a school visit to the DMA?

Before filling out a visit request form, please choose three possible dates for your visit, double-checking test dates, holidays, class change times, and lunch schedules. The DMA is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Out of your three date choices, we will schedule you for the first available date. If those three dates are unavailable at the time of your request, we will contact you via email.

School visits must be scheduled online using one of the following forms at least three weeks prior to your requested date. If you have questions about the scheduling process, please email us at schoolprograms@dma.org.

Please allow 10 business days for your request to be processed. We understand timing is important when booking buses, and we do our very best to ensure everyone’s guided school tour is scheduled in a timely manner.

Note: September and October have the highest volume of tour requests, and it may take longer to schedule your tour. If you received a confirmation email (check your spam folder), we have received your request. You will receive another confirmation email from the School Programs coordinator once your reservation is confirmed. If you are on a tight schedule, please consider booking a self-guided visit

We are only booking for the FALL SEMESTER in August. Booking for the spring semester will open in November.

What is the difference between guided and self-guided visits?

Guided tours are led by volunteers trained to encourage creative thinking while addressing all learning styles. A guided tour generally includes five or six works of art. Guided tours are one hour long and can start as early as 10:00 a.m. for a group of 60 students or fewer per hour. Note: Some specific tour themes have a lower limit of students per hour. See tour theme list for details.

A self-guided visit allows students and chaperones to independently explore the Museum's collection galleries or special exhibitions as quickly or as slowly as they would like. Self-guided visits begin at 11:00 a.m. and are available until closing time for 100 students per hour.

What types of guided visits are available?

When can my group visit the DMA?

Guided tours are available Tuesday–Friday from September–May and are offered on the hour starting at 10:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m.

Self-guided groups may schedule a visit whenever the Museum is open: Wednesday–Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The DMA is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Text

How many chaperones do I need?

One adult chaperone is required for every 10 students. If there are not enough chaperones available upon arrival, your visit to the DMA may be canceled. Not having enough chaperones for your students is both a safety concern for your students as well as a safety concern for the Museum and the art on display. Chaperones must stay with their students until their visit is over, including during docent-guided tours.

What about transportation?

You must arrange your own transportation to the Museum. The DMA does not book buses. A booking for a bus is not the same as a school visit reservation.

Buses are granted free parking on Harwood Street along the right curb between Woodall Rodgers Freeway and Flora Street. Bus parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Museum security and the Dallas Police Department require that bus drivers stay with the buses while the students are in the Museum.

If anyone in your group is coming by car, parking is available in the Museum's underground garage for a flat rate of $20 per car. DMA Members park free.

Text

Where can student groups eat lunch?

Student groups may eat sack lunches in Klyde Warren Park, the DMA Sculpture Garden, or the Fleischner Courtyard on a first-come, first-served basis.

Groups are not allowed to bring sack lunches into the DMA Cafe or the dining area on Eagle Family Plaza. The Museum does not have an indoor eating facility for students in the event of inclement weather and may close outdoor areas due to wet or slippery conditions. Teachers are responsible for making alternative arrangements on cold or rainy days.

Text

Can we bring our sack lunches/coolers/backpacks into the Museum?

Food and beverages are not permitted in the galleries. All outside food, including sack lunches, lunch boxes, and water bottles, should stay on the bus or in cars during your visit. Backpacks, coats, and umbrellas should stay on the bus, but we do have a coat check located across from the main Guest Services Desk for keeping teacher items safe during your visit.

Text

Can we order box lunches from the DMA Cafe?

Yes! Reservations are required for groups of 15 or more. Call 214-922-1859 or email us for menu options, pricing, and reservations.

Text

Can my students take photos and sketch during their visit?

Photography is allowed in the Museum's collection galleries without a flash. Sketching and writing are permitted in the galleries with graphite and pencils only.

Text

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my visit?

Please email us as soon as possible. If you have a docent-guided tour and you have to cancel on the day of your visit, please email us by 8:00 a.m. that day so we can contact the volunteers assigned to your tour.
